Street curb & gutter workers

The Street Department maintains the infrastructure of city streets, signs, pavement markings, sidewalks, curb and gutter, storm drainage pipes and structures, and provides ice and snow control on streets located within the city limits. The department provides 24/7 emergency services to ensure safe and reliable roadways. The department is responsible for 125 miles of roads, 47 miles of sidewalk and 124 miles of curb and gutter within the city limits. Additionally, the department coordinates with NCDOT to ensure State maintained thoroughfares totaling 37 miles throughout Lexington remain in good repair.

Street patching workersThe department consists of 4 crews: Asphalt, Sign/Markings, Concrete and Construction. Street sweeping/flushing is performed on city streets and city owned property. The City increases productivity by cross training members of the crews to assist as necessary, while maintaining the specialized skills needed to accomplish the various tasks required of the street maintenance department. 

Public Services Manager Roger Jones oversees this area of responsibility.

    City crews have completed work to replace two leaking fire hydrants, which required water interruption on Thursday, February 15th.

    Lexington Utilities is beginning a project to upgrade natural gas lines along Fairview Drive between Talbert Blvd. and Cotton Grove Road.
