Goal Setting Process 
Traditionally in February every year, Lexington City Council holds a retreat and collectively sets goals for the community for the coming year.  It is important to convey that oftentimes, City Council's goals for the community span multiple years due to the complexity and the long range vision applied in setting the future direction for the City of Lexington.

Goal Accomplishments
Below are Top 10 Goals set by City Council for Fiscal Year 2012-2013.  Bulleted under each goal in bold are the major accomplishments achieved towards each of these important initiatives.  

  1. Planning, design and redevelopment of Depot District including restoration of passenger rail service in new multi-modal transportation station on City owned Plant 1 property
    • Multimodal Transportation Station planning funded with federal grant
    • Construction federal grant application filed with notification expected Fall 2013
    • Depot development in process with phased-in approach
    • Community mural art project in depot area
  2. Define new economic direction focusing on new business start ups and recruitment and supporting existing businesses in job creation/increasing tax base
    • Davidson County airport fuel rebate program to attract large planes and more tax base
    • Restructured Office of Business and Community Development to dedicate resources towards recruitment efforts
    • Aesthetic improvements to Civic Center to enhance pursuit of new events
    • Outdoor public City WiFi in uptown district fosters progressive business image
  3. Maintain City’s financial integrity
    • Pursuit of federal and state grants
    • Strategic use of controlled substance dollars for public safety initiatives
    • National recognition for 21 consecutive years
  4. Focus efforts on improving the City’s appearance, keeping the City clean and attractive
    • New street sweeper purchased and operational
    • Street resurfacing totaling approximately $710,000
  5. Support and create programs that will prepare students for good citizenship, successful future and jobs
    • Appointed Lexington City Government Youth Council
    • Recycling rollout design contest
    • Movie nights coordinated by Lexington City Government Youth Council 
  6. Diversify the brand of Lexington including marketing and image
    • Newly redesigned website launched
    • Business Development Consortium logo design
    • City of Lexington logo design
  7. Support enhanced public transportation - bus and rail
    • Partnered with Davidson County for bus route
    • Passenger rail pursued with grant application
  8. Pursue new recreational activities like senior park, biking trails, skate park, dog park
    • Facility study complete with recommendations for City Council to begin evaluating facility opportunities
    • Green Needles and Erlanger new park construction virtually complete 
  9. Support increased homeownership and other affordable housing options
    • Partner funding to Lexington Housing Community Development Corporation
    • Additional planning resources hired to increase support of neighborhood planning and initiatives 
  10. Develop more “green” initiatives
    • Successful implementation of curbside rollout recycling pilot project, funded by a grant
