The Office of Business and Community Development addresses a broad range of quality of life and public safety aspects through several core functions, including:
- Business Development: Collaborates with partner agencies, brokers, commercial property owners, developers and professional recruiters to recruit new retail and restaurant businesses, provide support to existing businesses, and assist local entrepreneurs in opening targeted business opportunities.
- Redevelopment: Currently implementing a $700,000 federal grant for engineering and planning of a Multimodal Transportation Center within the Depot District, which includes local and regional bus service and future passenger rail service. Working with State and Federal agencies to obtain required approvals and permits.
- Community Development: Works with partners such as the Lexington Homeownership Center and Habitat for Humanity to develop short and long range neighborhood and community improvement plans, seek grant funding, and administer revitalization efforts. Provides staff support to the Appearance Commission.
- Zoning and Land Use: Maintains, improves and enforces local zoning codes. Provides staff support to the Planning Board/Board of Adjustment and the Historic Preservation Commission. Assists applicants with Zoning Permits, Subdivisions, Certificates of Appropriateness and Special Event Permits.
- Inspections and Code Enforcement: Enforces local nuisance and cleanliness codes, the Minimum Housing Code, and the NC State Building Code.
