In 2014, City Council began working on a plan for the “Re-creation of Recreation”. Three of the four projects outlined in the original plan have been completed, including the Lexington Aquatic Park (completed 2015), Washington Park renovation and Splashpad (completed 2016), and a Lexington Skatepark (completed 2019). Planning is now underway for the fourth project, a Community Recreation Center!
The City of Lexington has hired a consulting firm, to explore options of what the community wants in a Community Recreation Center and present a plan for City Council’s consideration. This process was kicked off on February 23, 2022 when the Lexington City Council met with the consulting firm to participate in a visioning workshop.
The process will continue with public participation meeting on Tuesday, March 29 at 6pm at the Smith Civic Center, 217 S. Main Street, Lexington. Attendees at this meeting will hear a presentation from the consulting firm followed by a time for the attendees to share their interests and vision for a recreation center in Lexington. All are encouraged to attend.
There will be additional community input opportunities throughout the process including online surveys and focus group sessions. There will be a second public input meeting held on Tuesday, May 3 at 6pm for the consulting firm to present a preliminary proposal and receive community feedback. A final proposal is expected to be presented to City Council in late summer 2022.
