On February 11th, City Council unanimously appointed J. Alan Carson as City Manager to be effective February 25, 2013. The position was vacated with the retirement of John L. Gray on January 31, 2013. At the February 25th meeting, Alan Carson accepted his oath of office to carry out the duties as City Manager for the City of Lexington.
Prior to his appointment as City Manager, Mr. Carson has held the position of Assistant City Manager/Human Resources Director since February 2003. Mr. Carson was hired in 1989 as the City's first Utilities Marketing Manager and was assigned additional responsibilities for Customer Service in 1991 and Human Resources in 1997.
Alan Carson received his Bachelor of Science degree from Radford University in Virginia where he majored in Business. He is a 1993 graduate of Leadership Davidson County, a 1998 graduate of the 170-hour Municipal Administration Course at the School of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a 2007 graduate of the Public Executive Leadership Academy at the UNC School of Government.
In his career with the City, Alan Carson has:
- Developed effective marketing programs that significantly increased electric and natural gas customers
- Developed a market-based pay and benefits system and modern personnel policy allowing the City to retain its best employees
- Revamped the City's employee health and property insurance coverage in line with a business model in the face of rapidly escalating premiums
- Served as a member of the Lexington Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and United Way of Davidson County Board of Directors, as well as provided staff support to the Lexington Human Relations Commission
- Currently serves as a member of the Lexington Tourism Authority, J. Smith Young Y Board of Directors and Executive Board, Wake Forest Baptist Health-Lexington Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors.
Alan Carson has held increasingly responsible positions in City of Lexington government for nearly twenty-four years and his leadership for the organization will continue as City Manager.
