Purpose

Piles of Compost

Lexington has been composting residuals generated by the wastewater treatment plant at 500 Glendale Road since 1990. This process allows the City to dispose of wastewater sludge, as well as most of the leaf and yard waste collection in an environmentally friendly manner.

Available for Purchase

Every year, about 6 million pounds of compost are sold to citizens. Compost is sold to the public from 8:00 - 4:00 Monday through Friday and from 9:00 - 2:00 on Saturday. The employees at the site cannot accept cash. Please make plans to remit a check or money order made payable to the City of Lexington. Visit the City's Fee Schedule for current compost rates. Discounted bulk rates are also available. For additional information, please contact us.

Awards and Recognition

The compost facility was awarded EPA’s national award for excellence in 2000.
