Home MenuWhat to Expect During Road Resurfacing
What You Need to Know
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated and every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to those adjacent to the work area. Please review the following bullet points that will help in insuring that the construction process moves forward as smooth as possible.
- During the construction period, any work crew member can assist citizens. Citizens are encouraged to get information from crews before calling customer service. Crew members will have the most current up-to-date information about the project.
- Citizens may not have access to their driveways, sidewalks or streets at all times during the construction process. The City will mitigate impacts and will ensure that driveways are open at the end of everyday.
- Please do not park along the street during the designated time period. *Vehicles will be towed, if necessary, to complete the work and all towed vehicles will be at owners expense.
- Please limit landscaping activity and keep all debris (lawn clippings, leaves, sticks, brush, trash, etc.) out of the road/gutter during this time.
- In the week(s) before construction begins, colored paint markings and/or flags will begin to appear within and around the worksite. These markings indicate the presence of underground utilities. The markings allow workers to dig safely around those facilities. Please do not remove flags or obscure paint markings. For more information about these markings and what they indicate, please visit NC811.org.
- Keep children and pets out of freshly paved or painted areas to avoid tracking asphalt, tack, paint, sealants, etc. into houses. The City of Lexington will not be responsible for damages or cleaning services.
- Please refrain from using lawn sprinklers, washing cars, etc. on day of treatment. The pavement must be dry during the construction process.
Rain or unforeseeable conditions may delay work until the following day. - The City of Lexington and/or the paving contractor will send a notice to all residents and business owners at least 48 hours prior to any construction activity that will limit or restrict use of the roadway and/or access to driveways.
- If your personal property is damaged by the City of Lexington or a contractor, please contact Risk Management at 336-248-3955.
We Care About Your Safety!
Safety is our top priority. Work zones can be hazardous to pedestrians, property owners, vehicles, children and pets. The City wants you to have the information you need to be safe during resurfacing and pavement construction.
Work Zones
Freshly placed asphalt can reach temperatures greater than 300 °F which can burn unprotected skin and paws of animals walking across the surface. Wet concrete can cause chemical burns if it comes into contact with skin.
The tack coat that is applied prior to new asphalt is extremely sticky and can ruin clothes and shoes, and could be harmful to pets.
Please keep children, pets, bikes, cars, and trucks away from the tools, machines, supplies, and construction workers. Pets should be kept on a leash at all times when in and around a work zone.
There may be additional trip hazards caused by certain construction activities related to sidewalks, ADA ramps, and roadways. The City will do its best to mitigate impacts to these areas, but it is not always possible. Use caution when walking and biking through work zones.
Pedestrians should be vigilant and look out for equipment and other hazards when in the work zone. Operators of equipment may not be able to see you, so take extra care around moving equipment.
Traffic
Construction will slow down traffic in your neighborhood. Please use caution, travel at lower speeds, be vigilant, read traffic signs, and follow directions from workers. Large equipment can pose sight issues for drivers and vehicles should not enter a work zone unless instructed to do so by a worker.
Advance notice will be given to all property owners in the area of the work and all road closures will be posted on the City's website and on all social media.
Please plan accordingly when traveling to avoid unnecessary delays.
Equipment Storage
Sometimes the city or contractors will leave tools, machines, and supplies on your street overnight. Please stay away from them. If you see anyone on or around municipal equipment and supplies that do not work for the City of Lexington or the construction company please contact the City of Lexington Police Department Non-Emergency at (336) 243-3302.
